Review 2002/03

This season saw all the Byng Hall club's new centre hosting many of the matches in the TW League. The central venue bringing together the teams and adding more atmosphere to the matches.

In Division 1, Byng Hall A were hoping to defend the title they won for the first time last season after seasons of being pipped at the post by Telephones and Sandown. Without Mark Brown, the responsibility was handed down to the capable hands of Steve New, Paul Dunmall and Angie Bristow.

In the first half of the season Byng Hall only suffered won defeat, which was at the hands of Leigh, who brought in the services of Andy Houghton (the league's top rated player!) purely for that match, that with the "sub-arctic" conditions meant foe a tough match for the Byng side. By Christmas the league was clearly a three horse race with Byng, Leigh and Rotherfield vying for the honours.

In the second half of the season, Byng Hall avenged their defeat with a magnificent win over Leigh. Steve New proving the star with wins over Roger Pingram and Andy Houghton. These wins also secured Steve the top average in the division. Byng Hall secured the title with a win over Rotherfield. Even with a disputed match between Rotherfield and Leigh, Byng couldn't be caught and thus retained their title with points to spare!!!

In division 2, the title was won by Toc H B, who only lost three matches this season. The experience of Bob Everest, Ian Pearson and Malcolm Cole proving to strong for some of the younger teams in the league. An encouraging sign in this division was the team from Weald Angley entering. The team made up entirely of juniors, put some much needed new blood into the league. The youngsters may have found the league a little strong, but were successful in the Hospitals Cup, beating Byng Hall D in the final. So well done lads.

Byng Hall C's Bill Bayley also showed some really encouraging signs and certainly brightened up those long winter evenings with some brilliant wins. These wins earned Bill the top spot in the ratings jumpers so well done Bill!

I must add that Byng Hall A's success was also due to all our B team players that stepped into the breach, sometimes at the last minute, and won some vital games and secured the league title. Alec Bartlett definitely made the most of his opportunity to play some of the top players and picked up the most improved Junior award for his efforts. Thanks guys!

So all in all it was a very successful season for the Byng and lets hope they will be champions next season and make it three in a row!
