| Jasmin Defies the Seedings at Grantham | ||
Jasmin Ould 14 of the Byng hall Table tennis club Tunbridge Wells, exceeds her seeding at the East Midlands 4 star cadet and junior open held over the weekend of the 17th and 18th January at the Grantham Meres leisure centre. Jasmin currently England ranked 11 in the cadet age group (U15’s) was seeded only 12 th in the event with almost all of the England top ten players competing. She was to prove that seedings are not all they are cracked up to be, as she proceeded through the event knocking down player after player, including the scalp of Welsh international Chloe Thomas. Jasmin also beat Charlie Kirby in the quarter finals in 3 straight sets. Charlie had previously defeated the number 3 seed Yolanda King in the previous round. This put Jasmin in the semi final against England international Emily Bates the number one seed, unfortunately this is where her fantastic run came to an end going down in 3 close sets, but none the less a great run and superb performance, for the fast improving Ould. The surprise of the day was that Emily Bates lost in the final to the feisty little Lucy Davidson (seed 2) in the 5 th set after an epic struggle. Day two of the event was the Juniors U18’s, here Jasmin had the toughest group where even on qualification, she would either face Emily Bates again or the diminutive Tin Tin Ho the England No.4 cadet - neither of the girls would be an easy target and in the end Jasmin qualified 2 nd in her group on sets count back which meant she had Emily Bates to contend with yet again, the result of which was the same as on the previous day. Jasmin has just received he first invitation to join the England cadet training squad based at Lilleshaw national sports centre, over the weekend of 14 th & 15 th Feb in recognition of her fast ascent of the rankings, and with her wins at this event she will break into the top 10 in the country. Moreover, Jas has been invited to represent the leading team in the Premier Division of the Junior British League at the second round in February. |
