Byng Hall Girls

Weekend 2 Report

This weekend was the last session of the National Junior British league, the biggest table tennis event in the country. The event is held in Wolverhampton at the spectacular Aldersley leisure village played on 36 tables. 72 teams take part with upwards of 450 people involved in the staging of the event. The Byng Hall table tennis club based at St Johns CEP school, has 2 teams in this prestigious under 18’s event one boy’s and one girl’s. To attain this high standard the teams have first to qualify through the national league which is held regionally, the club itself actually runs this event for the south east of England. Each team has to at least win its respective region before a team can be put forward for the junior British league.

Maintaining a team of the required strength to stay in these divisions is down to the clubs excellent record of developing high standard junior players over a number of years.

The girl’s team of Chloe Dunmall, (15) Sarah Hubbard (17) Lisa Shadbolt (17) finished the first weekend on top of division 2 with 5 further matches to be played this weekend. They made an impressive start by beating Lea Hall 5-1 followed by a 4-2 over Oakbank Fast bats, extending their lead by a further 4 points. The last match of the day on Saturday was against the tricky unorthodox styles of the Darlington team, but again the Girls rose to the challenge dispensing with them 5-1. Adding a further 2 points to the now unassailable total, this meant the Byng Hall girls went into day two having already secured the division, what ever the outcome of the remaining two matches. Champions!!!!!

To top that, the organising committee which includes all the umpires, voted the girls, as team of the weekend for their outstanding performance, another great honour for the club.

Final averages Lisa Shadbolt 90%, Sarah Hubbard 70%, Chloe Dunmall 65%
